The weather is again playing havoc with our minds, it went from cloudy, raining, sunny, raining, foggy, cloudy, sunny, cloudy, sunny then sun went down at 9.15 and put us out of our misery!!
First on the plan today was Stonehenge, a bit touristy we thought but they have done a great job presenting the iconic site. The visitors center and ticket office is located in what looks like a huge hay shed, we walked the 2 kilometres across the paddocks to the stones, around the stones, through some woodland back to the visitors centre. Such a beautiful walk, we got out of the car and rugged up, boiling hot by the time we got to the stones. The stones themselves are very impressive and we could get quite close to them. They stopped people going up to the stones enmasse in the 1970s due to vandalism and because the ground around the stones was subsiding and risked the stones collapsing. The public has been able to book a tour into the centre but they've cancelled that till January 2020 (at this stage).
Well worth the visit but get there early, the traffic after about midday is horrendous.
On to Glastonbury, unbeknownst to us it is the Nimbin of the UK. Every hippie, witch, faith healer, fruitcake, fairy and dopehead calls Glastonbury home!!! It's all very weird watching the world go by along the main street. We walked up to the top of the Glastonbury Tor, a tall stone tower on the peak of a hill behind the town, certainly got the blood flowing, got there and some crazy woman was calling the gods to descend, she ignored us because she was in a trance, we took a couple of photos then walked back down before she had a chance to cast a spell on us!! Very foggy on the top, great views though.
Then down to the Glastonbury Cathedral which is actually a ruin, I'd say the Catholics did it!!! It would have been a huge structure in its day but still plenty of walls left to imagine what it was like back in the 1300s.
Home tonight at 6.30, the earliest we've made it home, after a late lunch we had cheese etc for tea with a cold beer and wine. Might have an early night at last!!!

You must have fit right in in Glastonbury! Hee hee! Are you sure you're not in Melbourne, you keep talking about the weather and it sounds just like Melbourne! If I didn't know that Stonehenge was in England somewhere I'd swear you are in Victoria. Keep up the good work, especially the photos I love then, there are never too many!
ReplyDeleteHi Guys, what a great trip. Sooo much history!!and spectacular scenery. You wouldn't believe it, I'm reading a book by Con Iggulden. It's all about Dunstan the abbot of Glastonbury who was responsible for the building the abbey. Fictional but based on true facts. Hope you come across some historical facts about the English Bowman. and how they win numerous battles and help shape the country. Vernon, great photos!! cheers gary
ReplyDeleteTrish and Gary, This weather does remind us of the Melbourne climate - never know what to wear and then change your mind 4 times a day - be prepared is the motto. We'll be on the lookout for the Bowman, he sounds dangerous, I'm sure he's in a tower somewhere!! Love Pam and Vernon
