On to bonnie Scotland today, had a wee stop at Hadrian's Wall, Gretna Green then to the B&B at Dumbarton near Glasgow.
Hadrian's Wall crosses England from coast to to coast so there are plenty of spots to see the sites. We chose Housesteads Roman Fort to visit. Stopped at the parking, didn't realise there was a walk through a deep gully to the fort, never mind, good for the circulation. Got up to the museum and watched the 6 minute film of the history of Roman occupation around here 2000 years ago, very interesting. Walked around the remains of the fort, very well maintained with lots of information at each step. Went up to the wall itself and walked along it where we were allowed then along it for a while. So well presented, we really enjoyed it.
Stopped at Gretna Green, made famous from 1754 when England changed the Marriage Act to prevent couples under 21 years of age marrying without their parents permission. Anyone younger would come to Gretna Green, which is just over the border in Scotland and get married in the blacksmiths shop at Gretna Green.
Lots of people eloped and headed to Gretna Green to get married and signed their marriage certificates at the anvil in the shop. This continued until the 1940s when Scotland changed their laws and England followed suit.
On to Glasgow, we didn't have lots of time and just had a short walk along the Clyde, got some groceries and settled into our B&B.
