Today was the day for the Yorkshire Dales. An absolutely amazing place, it is so vast it comes as a bit of a shock when you can drive for miles and not see another car or drive over a mountain pass and see the Yorkshire Dales National Park for as far as the eye can see. We did just a small section and were lucky enough to go along a few goat tracks, through a few sheep paddocks, into and out of a couple of back yards, along a few roads with guard rails and a few without. It's just good Pam was so supportive of all the decisions made between the satnav and I today....love conquers all!!!
Started our trip at the information centre at Appleby-In-Westmorland. Of course it wasn't open when we arrived so had a nice walk along the River Eden. Once we got into the centre they directed us to Hawes. Got some great information from them and went a couple of miles up to Hardraw to the highest unbroken falls in England, saw a mother duck with 10 ducklings fighting the rapids and doing a very good job too. Drove down to Ribblehead and walked down to the viaduct which carries the Settle to Carlisle train, huge structure over a hundred years old. We then took a short cut to Aysgarth along some roads that haven't been driven on for years!!!
After lunch we had a long walk in Aysgarth to the water falls, both the Upper Falls and the Middle Falls, the Lower Falls were just too far so we packed up and were going to head home when I got the idea to do a little detour over the Buttertubs mountain pass and past the Greatshunner Fell along a road appropriately named the Cliff Way. Not everyone in the car was overjoyed!!!
Made it home in one piece, great day touring and on the way to Scotland tomorrow.
