Cheddar Gorge and Bath

Plenty of plans today, decided on Cheddar Gorge first because the sun was out, then go to Bath for a little walk around.
Got to the Gorge at 9.30 so drove the length of it and back to the town centre, nothing opens till 10am so we went for a walk, had a coffee then started the walk up the gorge.  Jacobs Ladder was the start, 274 stairs till we got to the tower, another 56 stairs to the top with great views of rural England.  Then we decided to do the cliff walk but just to the second lookout.  Gruelling walk, over rocks and roots and forever upward.   Another view along the gorge and into the town.

On to Bath, first stop the visitors centre.  Bath is a very pretty city, most buildings are made from the same limestone quarried locally, it’s all very clean and all the buildings are in pristine condition.  We went into the ancient Roman baths built sometime about 2000 years ago.  Well worth the effort other than being overrun with tourists.  We had a good look around but couldn’t wait to get away from the annoying people!!   Did an historical walk around the city then went for a boat ride along the Avon River, got a little light rain on that trip.  By the time it finished the weather was getting cool, it was 5pm so we headed for home looking for an early night.  One interesting fact we learned – Arthur Phillip lived in a small village, Bathampton on the edge of Bath and his grave is in Bathampton.

Bath weir with the Pulteney Bridge.

We felt the water, it's quite warm.

The warm spring, they have a tap in the centre where you can taste the water, absolutely disgusting!!!

  1. Vernon were you having a soft drink whilst Pam has a wine? my how times have changed! I almost didn't recognise you! Do people bathe in the baths at Bath? And that is a serious question! It didn't look like anyone was in them.

  2. Trish, your eyes aren't deceiving you.....That's a beer really, I haven't changed THAT much!!! Nobody bathes in the water at the Roman Baths. There is another 'bath' near the hospital where people still bath in the spring water for 'health benefits'?? Not sure it could do any good though. Not sure but those springs may spring up anywhere in the area and they could be used for any purpose (other than for drinking in our opinion!!)
