Cardiff to North Wales

Left the south of Wales today, heading for Mold in the northern area.  We hadn’t visited Cardiff and thought obligated to visit the capital.  Drove the 40 minutes to the city, traffic in the city centre was chaotic, the satnav got a little upset, we drove over the river, past the stadium, past the markets and before we had driven through too many red lights, up too many bus lanes and across too many round-abouts, we gave up and headed north.   We stopped at a service centre for coffee and to regroup.
First stop was Aberaeron on the coast, a beautiful village, all the houses, businesses and government offices are well looked after and we loved their colourful paintwork on their buildings, everything well maintained, had a walk around the harbour then headed to Aberystwyth for a late lunch.

Aberystwyth was the site of the first university in Wales, and home to the Welsh National Library.  It’s a big student village with lots of the student accommodation along the water front.   We walked the length of the promenade on the north beach and kicked the rail, a tradition no one knows the origins of and no one knows why it’s even done, but when in Rome…….

Weather report.  The poor weather was clearing towards the north today, so naturally we followed it northward and caught up with it shortly after we left Aberystwyth.

We travelled through Snowdonia National park on the way to the B&B at Mold.  Travelled through valleys with mountains rising up around us and looked down on streams below.  We had mapped out a walk at Brithdir but the weather was a little unpredictable so we decided to head straight to Mold.  Little did we know the satnav again decided it had enough of real roads and we ended up driving about 5kms along some unnamed narrow roads, no-one else was silly enough to be there so we had a slow but non-fatal experience!!

Arrived at Mold at 7.30, worn out once again.

Lots of newspaper headlines today - 3 inches of rain!!! Flood warnings everywhere, rain tomorrow!!!

  1. You surely are seeing some beautiful spots and great pics. Not sure if we've had this conversation before, but seeing as you're having this love/hate relationship with your satnav, whenever John and I travel OS we get that country's SIM card, put it in our mobile and use Google Maps. Never had a problem! Looks like you do have a SIM that I can see through Whatsap, so perhaps this method may not cause you so much grief or excitement lol! Or perhaps that's what you're looking for???? Anyway, just a suggestion for happy travels. Take care. Love Deb and John xoxo

  2. You would think the UK, with such a small country and such a large population would have decent internet and mobile phone coverage. It doesn't, so relying on phone mapping GPS is not an option. The pub near our first B&B had dialup internet till 12 months ago, he now has cable internet but as soon as the kids get home from school in the village the internet is unusable anywhere in the village. Some of the B&Bs have no mobile coverage for up to 5 miles around and we will often get to a coastal village and have no coverage. Vodaphone claims to cover 97% of the UK population....just not area and Vodaphone is up there with the best!! Everyone relies on wifi here but it can be so slow, to upload 20 photos at home can take 5 mins, most places so far it can take 2 hours to do the same volume. Last nights was good, only 30 minutes. I've done speed tests in all our B&Bs, Aust NBN upload is about 20gbm, my home ADSL is 5gbm, the best I've had here is 0.7gbm (the worst doesn't even register) and everyone seems to think that's normal. No doubt in London and other big centres it's much better. We've found it strange after taking the Australian internet/mobile phone system for granted!! We will keep battling with our friend the satnav and hope we can control her a little!! Thanks for the suggestions though xxxxx
