Scarborough Whitby and more

Planned a short coastal drive today down the North Yorkshire coastline starting at Saltburn-by-the-Sea, through Whitby, Scarborough and calling in to Robin Hoods bay on the way home.
No traffic/parking tickets today so it's been a good day!
First was the quiet picturesque beach side town of Saltburn-by-the-Sea, of course we walked all the way from the top of town to the beach, they have a very well maintained pier and lots of small shops along the front.  It was casual, quiet and not crowded at all.
Next stop was Whitby, thousands thought it was a good idea too.  We stopped at the Park and Ride and caught the bus to the harbour.  Absolutely jam packed with tourists with a very busy harbour full of boats taking tourists on 20 minute boat rides either around the harbour or out past the harbour entrance.  All very commercial operation designed to extract as many dollars as possible from the punters.  Lots of families at the harbour catching small crabs just like how we used to catch yabbies in dams.  Bucket loads of crabs being caught.
We had lunch, fish and chips in Whitby then walked out along the pier and took the 81 steps up to the top of the obsolete lighthouse.  Nice view of the harbour.
On the road again to Scarborough, a very popular beach for locals and visitors alike.  Today was a hot 20 degrees and lots of people were taking advantage of the warm weather by packing the beach.  We decided to stay out of the water, walked along the promenade then headed to Robin Hoods Bay.
This is where people who walked across England (as Mum has done) along Wainwrights Way finish (or start) their walk.  Very pretty town, just a thousand steps down to the water, then a thousand steps back.
Decided we'd had enough for the day and turned for our B&B in Darlington.

Saltburn-by-the-Sea, the train wasn't working so we had to walk down to the pier.

Huge quiet beach

Coloured change room along the beach

  1. Great stuff again, guys.
Do those trains actually travel horizontally, and not with both ends on the track?? Looks spooky!!
Also, did you see the statue of Captain Cook on the hill at Whitby? It was overlooking the harbour when we were there.

  2. The trains were out of order so we wouldn't be very good judges of spooky..... We missed the Captain, I'm sure he hasn't sailed anywhere since you were here??? Love Pam and Vernon xxxxx
